What happens when a director doesn't have the budget for a proper robot costume? You enlist your friend who has a gorilla costume and you plop a diving helmet on his head, of course!

That's what Phil Tucker did when he made 1953's "Robot Monster" and lacked a funds for a costume after spending the majority of the budget on the 3D camera. Of interesting note is some early product placement, with N. A. Fischer Chemical Products getting a prominent shout-out for the "billion bubble machine" that Ro-man/Robot Monster uses to communicate with his superiors in space. Yep, you can use bubbles to send intergalactic messages. I did not know that.
